About Rhodes..

Rhodes is one the largest of the Greek islands and has so much to offer. While Lindos is a 'must visit' location, the
rest of the Island needs to be explored. A hire car is not essential but is recommended to make the most of your holiday.

Rhodes Town

Lindos has been a popular destination for tourists for many years. It's a charming historic town set on a rock with the imposing Acropolis sitting above.
The town bustles with activity and offers an extensive choice of excellent restaurants and shops. No traffic is allowed in the town which adds to the appeal of Lindos. Donkeys carry visitors up to the Acropolis, however, for the more energetic you can climb the path leading to the entrance.

A little history about Lindos...
The town was built by the Dorians at the same time as Kameiros and Lalyssos in the 12th century B.C. Rhodes sent nine ships to the Trojan War and most probably came from Lindos. It demonstrates that during that period Lindos was the most powerful town in Rhodes and the development of the town was due to its naval power. Its two harbours as well as it impregnable acropolis were unique on Rhodes. There is information that Lindos already had colonies by the 7th century and that it monopolized a large part of trade and shipping in the Mediterranean.

The Lindians were the first to draw up a naval code of justice, later known as the Rhodian Naval Code. This was to become the basis of Roman naval justice and is even to be found at core of modern maritime law. The Lindians were also great sculptors. Their bronze statuses are famed for their incomparable craft. The famous Colossus of Rhodes was a bronze statue by the Lindian artist Chares. The town reached the height of its power in the 6th century B.C. particularly during the reign of Cleobulos who ruled for more than 40 years. Cleobulos is regarded as one of the Seven Sages of antiquity, primarily because he was the first to support the funding of public works by fund-raising drives among the citizens. The money from these drives was used to built the Temple of Athena in 550 B.C.

Prasonisi. This is at the most Southern point of Rhodes and is well worth the drive. The last few miles are quite remote and Prasonisi is found after crossing Military ranges. It is a fascinating place where a sand bar separates two seas. On the one side is the Mediterranean whilst on the other side is the Aegean Sea. The Mediterranean is relatively calm whilst the Aegean is completely the opposite and is a haven for windsurfers. Many international visitors spend their holiday in a motorhome on the beach at Prasonisi taking advantage of the ideal windsurfing conditions.

The island.
There are number of must see places to visit on Rhodes. Examples include:
The Valley of the Butterflies. The valley is found in the western side of Rhodes island, approximately 27 km from Rhodes city and 5 km to the south east of Theologos village. It is a natural nature reserve and as its name indicates, this area is a lush green valley that gets overwhelmed in spring and autumn with butterflies of the Panaxia genus, Species Quadripunctaria Poda.  It is in fact a type of tiger moth.

Mount Attavyros. Fancy accepting the challenge of climbing a mountain. A 2-3 hour climb to the island's highest point (1215m). On leaving Embonas on the road towards Siana, drive up one of the agricultural roads on the left and find a place to park. On foot, you continue up through the wine growing area in the obvious direction. There is no explicit marked path but red paint on rocks towards the top marks the best route. It is also possible to drive up the mountain: the approach road comes from the South.

Rhodes Town.
The home to the majority of the inhabitants of Rhodes, well over half the population of the island. Once the home of the Colossus, one of the 7 wonders of the World, Rhodes is a beautiful small city offering a wealth of interesting places to see.

Rhodes New Town is outside the city walls and is a more cosmopolitan area offering excellent shopping opportunities. Those living on Rhodes conduct their shopping and go about their daily business in this area.

(The below photos give a general overview of the lovely town)

Rhodes Old Town is very popular with tourists. It is contained within the old city walls and is full of narrow and cobbled streets with many restaurants, shops and museums.
